Armed Forces Military Museum

Back in January last month, I visited the Armed Forces Military Museum in Largo, FL (just north of St. Petersburg on the West Coast) with my friends Jason Pichon, his brother Josh McLaughlin, and Elaine Cruz for a day of researching military equipment through history and drawing.

I got only a couple drawings but took lots of photos for reference. Hopefully I'll look at the photos and make more drawings later on. These were done with the Pentel Tradio and Pocket Brush pens on Moleskine.

I felt like I was a kid again drawing my G.I. Joes! I highly recommend this place if you have to research any type of historical military equipment!

Thomas Thorspecken's "The Hub"

Thor sketched my co-workers Curator and History of Visual Communication Course Director Kim Lomas, Resident Artist Tom Buzbee, and Studio Artist Avaryl Buzbee. Also at the bottom left of the page, you'll find a familiar figure holding a Nikon camera (as the unofficial photographer) and drinking from a water bottle while chatting up co-worker and Art History Assistant Course Director Jessica Vick.

Thorspecken is an Orlando event reporter except instead of taking pictures, he sketches the event (or part of it) in watercolor. He was a clean-up artist at Walt Disney Feature Animation Florida and now teaches in the 2D Animation class at Full Sail University's Computer Animation department. I worked at Disney Florida on "Brother Bear" and although we never worked together, I hold Thor in the highest respect for working at the studio.

Done with a Pentel Tradio pen and gray Copic Sketch markers (N2, 5, & 8) on Strathmore 500 Series marker paper 9"x12". My scanner computer is still broken and I waited a bit until I could scan a bunch of them from work.

The fall / whiteboard

Hi guys, hope everybody is enjoying the fall! Superstorm Sandy didn't affect Central Florida that much aside from bringing cold weather a bit early this year but my heart really goes out to all those affected in the north east coast of the U.S. and Caribbean. If you'd like to help but can't make it up there, make a contribution to The American Red Cross.

Fall means a busy schedule at my day job at Full Sail University so that's why I've been a bit M.I.A. lately. I've been freelancing too but can't really show that work here without permission. I can tell you it's based on concepts in this book. And also had a family visit with my sister and nephew and I believe we have another artist on our hands! Check out Liam's abstract handiwork (looks like a bird in profile to me):

Couple more things: I still have a batch of figure drawings to post from my last Crealdé Sunday session but it'll have to wait until I scan them, my scanner isn't on the fritz but the computer it was hooked up to is so I need to find an adapter. I'm also getting together something for a local show in a new gallery in December and lining up a couple of album covers for a couple of talented local folks.

Analog Artist Digital World

Gotta mention that my good friend Tom Buzbee and I got a mention on the talented Tom Thorspecken's Analog Artist Digital World blog! It's a great art and local Orlando event blog, highly recommended! Alice for Redlight

Hey guys, I'll be selling a colored print of my "Alice" drawing at the Anti-mall Art Show at Redlight Redlight this Saturday Nov. 26 (my birthday!). The original drawing was done from life at a figure drawing session in Crealdé where the model wore costumes and had an Alice one. Done with Copic markers (N2, N5, brush pen) on Aquabee 808 Super Deluxe 9"x 12" paper. Here's the original drawing, the print at Redlight is tinted with watercolor:

"Alice", print at Redlight will be colored.

Here are some figure drawings from last Sunday's Crealde morning class. I usually attend when one of my friends prods me to go since it's better to be in good company that early. This day, my friend Seung Kim was the instigator and I also ran into my ex-student Robert Jakab. Mai Justice process

This week I've done some quick digital concept sketches for a character in Wolfgang Wozniak's "Mai Justice" game. Wolfgang is a Full Sail University alumni who posted one of his characters at our DADA Full Sail art club Facebook page and I decided to do a short critique demo there where I redrew the character. At  the Dos Illustros blog I posted the final color quick sketch but here I will post all of the ones showing the process of how I got to it.

Here's the original sketch:

I started drawing on top of the original, giving her more realistic facial proportions:

I then started adding Native American features, I used Irene Bedard (star of "Smoke Signals" and voice of Disney's "Pocahontas") for reference:

Then added the character's details:

And finally quick color to see what she'd look like:
