Slowing down

Hey guys,

My schedule has been really busy with teaching classes both on-campus and online for the last 3 months but thankfully things have slowed down for a bit and I'm going on vacation next week to recharge batteries. I'm planning to do some personal artwork along with the relaxation before things pick up again so hopefully there'll be more art coming to the blog here. Now that I have at least a working scanner in the studio, I'll be able to post the last Crealdé figure drawing session I went to.

For now I'd like to post a portrait of U2's guitarist The Edge from the Joshua Tree days (photo reference from Anton Corbjin) done recently for my friend Jeff Lang. It's pen & ink on 5"x7" Canson BFK Rives cream paper, click on the image for a closer look:

Jacob & Bailey

Last year I had the great pleasure to do an illustration for my friend & co-worker Jacob Kaplan's Save-The-Date wedding postcard. The final illustration was painted on an 8.5"x11" gessoed illustration board with Golden acrylics. Big Figure Drawing Post

Drawings posted after the break, these are figure drawings from the Sunday morning class at Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park, FL for 4 sessions in the last couple of months. Collaboration

I've started a big painting (5'x7') collaboration with our school's Resident Artist and my friend, the amazingly talented Tom Buzbee! Click on his name to see more of his work and you will see why I am super excited about it! The man is not only a fantastic fine artist who's found his own voice but as an illustrator, I respect him highly for working in places like NASA and Disney's EPCOT. And I always was a bit jealous that my friends McArthur Albert and George Frei got to do painting with him so I'm really glad I finally get to do one!


I will try to post progress photos of the painting here on the blog as we go along. After stretching & double priming the big canvas, here's our 1st step: covering the background in expressive washes of black acrylic paint. The rectangles you might see in it are pieces of paper towels that we threw on it to soak some of the paint out. They left some of the pattern & shapes from the paper towels and we also threw them back at the painting to build more textures. Click on the photo for a closer look:

1st thursdays pt. 2

Here is the full Bugs Bunny piece, which along with my Amélie Poulain piece (12"x18" acrylic on canvas) and Audrey figure drawing (9"x12" on marker paper"), were exhibited at the OMA 1st thursdays Full Sail Art Show last May 3rd. Bugs Bunny for Redlight

Sorry for the lack of updates! I know it's been month and 1/2 but after X-mas break, I had to go back to work and am getting used to the routine of making art again. Here's a sneak peek at my painting for tomorrow's Redlight Redlight 60's & 70's Art Show. I tried to do it in the flavor of my favorite 60's illustrators such as Al Parker, Bernie Fuchs, & Bob Peak. It's in acrylic and way bigger than my usual pieces at 24"x36" (I tend to work small). I'll post the full painting from the show tomorrow.

Holiday Card!

Here is my Holiday card for 2011! You can check out the initial sketches at the Dos Illustros blog by clicking on the blog name. It was inspired by one of my favorite illustrators, Jim Flora, and finished digitally in Adobe Illustrator (Fonts are Kon Tiki Aloha and Aloha Ligatures). My brother and I will be heading out to Puerto Rico to see our parents and grandparents during Christmas. Internet access will be limited but I hope to post again by the time I'm back before the new year comes.

I've still yet to see the new Muppets movie, of which I've heard nothing but good things. Maybe just before the trip?

Alice for Redlight

Hey guys, I'll be selling a colored print of my "Alice" drawing at the Anti-mall Art Show at Redlight Redlight this Saturday Nov. 26 (my birthday!). The original drawing was done from life at a figure drawing session in Crealdé where the model wore costumes and had an Alice one. Done with Copic markers (N2, N5, brush pen) on Aquabee 808 Super Deluxe 9"x 12" paper. Here's the original drawing, the print at Redlight is tinted with watercolor:

"Alice", print at Redlight will be colored.

Mai Justice process

This week I've done some quick digital concept sketches for a character in Wolfgang Wozniak's "Mai Justice" game. Wolfgang is a Full Sail University alumni who posted one of his characters at our DADA Full Sail art club Facebook page and I decided to do a short critique demo there where I redrew the character. At  the Dos Illustros blog I posted the final color quick sketch but here I will post all of the ones showing the process of how I got to it.

Here's the original sketch:

I started drawing on top of the original, giving her more realistic facial proportions:

I then started adding Native American features, I used Irene Bedard (star of "Smoke Signals" and voice of Disney's "Pocahontas") for reference:

Then added the character's details:

And finally quick color to see what she'd look like:

Welcome!

As the blog says, my name is Hugo Giraud and I am an artist in Central Florida. This is my 1st personal blog and I will be posting all of my current artwork here. I also share and co-founded the Dos Illustros sketchblog earlier this year with my friend & co-worker George Frei where we post sketches and art every week as a challenge to stay working and motivated. This will be my own little corner to update or post anything and everything else that doesn't fit there or in my future website. Hopefully it can also give you a glimpse of how I think and work.

A bit of background: born and raised in Puerto Rico, moved to Florida as a teenager. I attended the famed Barbara Bassett Art Workshop in Winter Park, FL and the Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) in Columbus, Ohio. Although my major was Illustration, most of my professional work has been in the 2D animation industry. I will be launching a website soon at cargocollective.com/hugogiraud and you can see my film and tv credits at IMDB. Currently I am the Course Director for the Design & Art Theory class at Full Sail University's Digital Arts & Design and Graphic Design programs.
